Biorisk Management Training 2024

The Institutional Biosafety Committee of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman successfully organized two sessions of Biorisk Management Training for academic and laboratory staff from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR). The sessions were held from 23 to 25 October 2024 at the UTAR Sungai Long Campus and from 17 to 19 December 2024 at the UTAR Kampar Campus. The training aimed to enhance participants' knowledge of biosafety and biosecurity principles, equip them with the skills needed to manage laboratory risks effectively, and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.

The sessions were conducted by a team of experienced professionals: Dr. Teh Lai Kuan, Dr. Tang Pek Yee, Ms. Heng Sze Lu, Ms. Teh Hui Xin, and Ms. Habibah Dahali.

The training covered a wide range of topics essential for effective biorisk management. It combined lectures and hands-on sessions to deliver a comprehensive learning experience. Participants were trained in the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including correct donning and doffing techniques, demonstrated using Glo Germ liquid to visualize contamination. They learned effective methods for managing biological spills and participated in a quiz to assess their understanding. Additionally, participants analyzed and presented case studies of past biosafety incidents and prepared detailed risk assessments for laboratory activities.

The training was very interactive, allowing participants to acquire practical skills and a thorough understanding of biorisk management. It represented a significant step in fostering a strong culture of biosafety and biosecurity at UTAR. By equipping academic and laboratory staff with essential skills and knowledge, the training ensures that laboratory practices comply with safety standards and regulatory requirements.
